Momofuku Ando: The One to Feed the Whole World

When the Japanese decided to make the conclusion and define the most useful innovations that they have introduced during the latest two millenia it was decided on all hands that it is instant noodle soup. The second important thing was karaoke, and the compact disc took only the fifth place.

Momofuku Ando, an orphan from Taiwan supposed that there will be eternal peace on Earth when there is enough food for everyone. He was born on the 5th of March 1910 and was brought up by his grandparents. The young Ando was a go getting guy and soon opened his own textile business. After the defeat of Japan in the Second World War Ando had to acquire the Japanese citizenship and move to Osaka. Later he admitted that the idea to prevent the world hunger came to him while he was standing in a queue for a handful of rice.

The people of Japan were experiencing awful hunger after the war as they were not accustomed to bread. In 1948 the government insisted that the population should consume bread in order to spare the expenses of the state. The native Japanese grew attached to rice and noodles and didn’t suppose bread to be a proper food.

Finally Momofuku Ando made up his mind to invent noodles that would be cheap and could be stored for a long time. He tried to dry the noodles but it got only worse and lost its taste. The last try was to soak the noodles with the chicken broth and then fry it in the coconut oil. After this run of noodles was ready Ando dried it and found out that it hadn’t lose its taste and retained longer shelf life. Another run of this ramen was supplied with a small packet of spice and the third one provided the whole set of items that the modern people are accustomed two. That is how Chicken Ramen, a bag of noodles with two packets containing spice and palm oil, appeared. It happened on the 28th of August 1958. In less than a year this product gained the incredible popularity.

Why Momofuku Ando decided to prepare ramen with chicken flavor? The matter is that the one with the beef flavor wouldn’t be accepted in India or Indonesia as well as the pork one wouldn’t be consumed by Arab customers.

The instant servings of hot ramen constitute the basic stock of food which is provided to the victims of catastrophes by the Red Cross. Many national armies also supply their staff with Chicken Ramen.
